  Geographical Settings
Maison-Bayou has grown substantially since first opening in the spring of 1993. Our 52 wooded acres now include three distinctively different Lodging areas..... the Original Plantation area, our frontage on Big Cypress Bayou, and the Poolside Cabana area. Each of our 12 units have individually controlled heat & air conditioning, private baths, and coffee makers. Plus, some have fireplaces, some have television, some have kitchenettes...... and all have our assurance that your comfort is the top priority!
  Inn Amenities
The original "Plantation" area consists of our four Quarters Cabins, The Robert E. Lee Paddlewheeler (actually floating on the private cypress pond), and Erin Jo's Room, which is located in the main Plantation house. This "Overseer's House" has a glassed-in dining gallery where the sumptuous full breakfast is served on weekends, looking out toward the over-the-water Gazebo.

Next is the area located directly on the banks of Big Cypress Bayou. Here are two of our most popular units, the Riverfront Railcar and the Frisco Caboose. Both are authentic railroad cars, outfitted as private lodging.

The most recent addition to Maison-Bayou, is our Poolside Cabana area. Here is a unique "Lagoon" style swimming pool complete with rock waterfall, and our four spacious Cabanas directly adjacent, giving the area a distinctly "tropical" feel.

All of the details, list of amenities, photos, and pricing of these units can be found on our "Lodging" page. Just click on this hot-link:

Maison-Bayou started as an authentic recreation of an 1850's Creole Plantation. The Antebellum family history of owners Pete and Jan Hochenedel was the original inspiration for this unique bed and breakfast setting. After G. Michel Hochenedel first immigrated from Strasbourg, France, to New Orleans in the 1830's, he worked for a Customs House, was a cabinetmaker, and had a beer house in the Vieux Carre, or French Quarter. After General Butler commandeered the family home during the Northern occupation in 1863, the Hochenedel family moved to Baton Rouge and bought a Plantation there. While researching this genealogy, the Hochenedel's discovered that a cousin, Frances Hochenedel Monroe and her family currently live in the "Big House" on the Burden Plantation in Baton Rouge. That plantation is now a part of L.S.U.'s Rural Life Museum, and is the model for the origins of Maison-Bayou in Jefferson
